What were they thinking?!?\n\nYes, I know, you're clueless to what I'm talking about, so I'd better elaborate I suppose.  *sigh* if I must, I must...\n\nI finally got my copy of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera_the_Brave Gamera the Brave] last week. (Japanese/Chinese languages with English/etc. subtitles.) I watched it last night and my reactions are mixed.  \n\nIt was a decent film to follow up on the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera#Sh.C5.8Dwa_era Sh\u014dwa era] films... but the Gamera universe had finally gotten critical acclaim with the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera#Heisei_era Heisei era] films. People ''liked'' the Heisei films! (I still contend that [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera_3:_Awakening_of_Irys Revenge of Irys] is probably the best [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiju kaiju] film ever.) Gamera as antihero kicks some major kaiju butt!  To reboot the universe after finally building up public and critical success seems like a move that only movie studio executives could make.  \n\nOn the other hand... the thing that made Gamera unique from Gojira (Godzilla) was that he was \"Friend of all children\".  The Sh\u014dwa films were more kid-oriented, which helped them survive \nagainst the ... um ... ''monster hit'', Godzilla.  (Pun unavoidable.)  In that regard, the reboot to a Sh\u014dwa style Gamera was a success.  Alas, it is a pity that the movie bombed in the Japanese box office, since that means we'll never get an American release.  (''Especially'' with the scenes of Gamera crashing into / embedded in one of a pair of towers.  Much too 9/11 for an American audience.)\n\nI like the idea of making Gamera a species name and giving him a proper name, but naming him Toto?  Come on!  I can't think of that name without thinking \"''I'll get you my pretty, and your titanic turtle Toto too!''\"\n\nOverall [[Template:Ratings|rating]] 7/8... It definitely wasn't a 10+ like Revenge of Iris, but I expected as much, knowing ahead of time it was a Sh\u014dwa reboot.  However, the fact that it didn't even try to retcon the Heisei films into the same universe made me drop it a point from my expectations.  Of course, I like that the Heisei trilogy is 'complete' in and of itself.  (I liked the dark ending.) I always hate it when a good ending is ruined by a sequel, so I'll leave the rating at 7 rather than dropping down to 5.  I suppose they had to reboot the universe somehow after the end of the previous trilogy, but why ''this'' low??  I liked seeing Gamera as a baby (although they could have picked a better 'actor' species to more closely resemble the adult Gamera), and the mini [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamera_vs._Guiron Guiron] battle was too cute for words.  *throat clear* *macho grunts*  Sorry.... I tend to like Shyamalan's movies, and I like the idea behind this one, but I feel the movie itself was premature.  I can completely see why it has such a low rating on [http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lady_in_the_water/ Rotten Tomatoes].\n\nLet me explain...\n\nI really like it when someone tries to invent an entirely new mythos.  I like the ideas of the Scrunts and Tartutics.  I would have truly loved to have heard this story as a radio drama.  (Or as the bedtime stories from which it spawned.)\n\nThat said, it just doesn't transition well to a movie.  \n\nMuch of the movie is expository dialog introducing the mythology.  As J. Michael Straczynski is fond of saying, if you can step away from the TV and do something else without missing any of the story, you're not watching TV, you're listening to the radio.  (At least he did do ''some'' editing.  The deleted scenes on the DVD show that the movie had a ''lot'' more expository dialog.)\n\nI think Shyamalan should have kept it to the [http://www.amazon.com/Lady-Water-M-Night-Shyamalan/dp/0316017345/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/104-7476288-5009520?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181879822&sr=8-2 book form] and let the universe develop in the literary format for a while before taking it to the big screen.  (Perhaps by-way of an audio drama.)  It's a pity that the movie has probably killed the mythos in its infancy.\n\nSo much for the mythos itself, now for the film-making aspect...\n\nI liked the creature designs for the Scrunts and Tartutics.  I do wish they had done some prosthetic work on Bryce Dallas Howard to distinguish her from humans a little bit.  (After all, human legs just aren't appropriate for something that spends its life in the water.)  (Of course, I didn't terribly ''mind'' seeing a half naked Bryce Dallas Howard in human form, but that's another story.)  Just something to distinguish her as a Narf would have been nice.  (Of course it would have taken out some of the \"suspense\" if she was clearly not human, but that sense of suspense wasn't really pursued anyways.)  ...and don't get me started on the name \"Narf\".  Every time I heard it in the movie I chuckled, thinking of Pinky's catch-phrase in ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinky_and_the_Brain Pinky and the Brain]''.\n\nOn to the hubris...\n\nThe blatantly obvious treatment of the movie critic in the movie was a little annoying.  OK, so it was very annoying.  I'm surprised ''any'' movie critic gave it a positive review after that.  Maybe they had just fallen asleep by the time those scenes came around.  (Or maybe they were just making out with their girlfriend / boyfriend / self in the back of the theater instead of paying attention.)\n\nAlso, M. Knight choosing himself to play the part of the author whose writings would eventually change the world just reeked of hubris.  I mean it's one thing to have a cameo in your movies, but to put yourself in a major role as someone who will save the world -- well, it's just bad mythologizing.  It's like if Homer had taken Achilles out of The Iliad and put himself in the role.\n\nFinally, the audio editing was horrible.  The audio was so bad I couldn't understand half of what they were saying in some of the more important scenes because MNS seems to like to have his actors whisper the important lines because he seems to think it adds to the mystery.  (A cheap trick to make you watch the movie again rather than legitimate misdirection techniques like he used in Sixth Sense.)\n\nSo, to recap...\n\nI liked the beginnings of a new mythos, but I really think it should have had some more time to develop in other media before it was brought to the screen.  Unfortunately, the movie will probably just make the mythology end up as a footnote on MNS's Wikipedia entry when Father Time looks back on our society.  \n\n(Long live JRR Tolkien's memory.
